GUIDED TOURS OF

STUTFALL CASTLE

SATURDAY 11 AUGUST 2018,  2.00 PM and 4.00 PM

£5 PER PERSON (AGE 16 +)

SHAL is organising a tour of Stutfall Castle by one of Kent’s leading archaeologists –Keith Parfitt of Canterbury Archaeological Trust.  This is a unique opportunity to visit the one Roman Saxon Shore Fort that is not normally open to the public. Hear about the excavations in 1850 and 1978, how this fort once guarded the entrance to a huge lagoon that is now Romney Marsh, how it was
connected to Canterbury, Dover and Ashford by the Roman road network and probably had a harbour that may have been used to export wheat, timber, iron and slaves.

We will meet in the West Hythe car park at 1.30 pm for 2.00pm tour or 3.30pm for 4.00pm tour.  From there it is a short walk along the canal path to the farm gate and then a gradual uphill, uneven and possibly muddy path to the site. Stout footwear and long trousers are essential and, if sunny, sunscreen, hats and water are required as there is no shade.

Booking is essential as numbers will be
limited – please email guytopham@gmail.com .  We regret children
under the age of 16 cannot be admitted to the site.
The cost is £5 per person, to be paid into SHAL bank account sort code
40-21-15, account No. 11692704 or cheque
payable to SHAL and mailed or delivered to Guy Topham, Shepmead, Berwick Lane, Lympne, CT21 4JX.
